A coupling reaction is a reaction or reaction sequence in which the net reaction is the connection of carbon skeletons of two compounds containing a common functional group.

eg:

The net reaction in this reaction sequence is the connection of carbon skeletons of 1 and 2, both organic halides.  Thus, this reaction sequence is a coupling reaction.
