Cyclic Osmate Ester

The product of cycloaddition of an alkene to OsO4 is called a cyclic osmate ester.

eg:

Although stable enough to be isolated, cyclic osmate esters are usually converted to glycols by being treated in situ with aqueous NaHSO3 (see dihydroxylation).

The mechanism of this reaction is not fully understood.
